Probabilmente tra le derive, l’Optimist è la più diffusa al mondo, nata nel 1947 ha fatto conoscere la vela a intere generazioni di velisti, lungo 2,30 m. largo 1,13 m. peso sui 35 kg. con una velatura di 3,25 mq. caratterizzato dallo scafo a spigolo con fondo piatto e prua tronca, è comodo con buone doti veliche e buona stabilità ma quando imbarchi acqua devi “sgottare” come un matto per buttarla fuori, ormai poco performante adatto solo all’iniziazione e forse demotiva i più piccoli dall’andare a vela. Negli ultimi anni si è assistito ad un cambiamento forse “epocale” nelle derive, oggi esistono delle derive più facili, più performanti e divertenti che possono stimolare di più i bambini ad imparare ad andare a vela in modo più giocoso, piuttosto che agonistico, anche perché se per i grandi la deriva può essere un’alternativa alle barche d’altura per i bambini è l’unica condizione per veleggiare in autonomia. Tanto per citarne uno l’O’pen Bic lungo 2,75 m. largo 1,14 m. con due velature una di 3,8 m. l’altra di 4,5 m. ed un peso di circa 45 kg., con uno scafo veloce e reattivo e grazie agli spigoli offre equilibrio e stabilità, il doppio fondo dello scafo, il bordo libero quasi azzerato ed il pozzetto aperto a poppa consentono l’evacuazione immediata dell’acqua imbarcata sia in navigazione che dopo una scuffia.Lo scafo è costruito in polietilene termoformato praticamente indistruttibile, con le sue linee open e grazie alla planata facile fa sembrare l’Optimist pesante e lento, addirittura consente delle velocità discrete anche ad un timoniere di 80 kg.
